Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of betraying a verbal agreement they made before the 2022 elections, leading to his impeachment.
Speaking from Karen Hospital, where he was treated after falling ill, Gachagua claimed that Ruto, whom he trusted deeply, has turned against him, leading to his current woes.
Gachagua further alleged two assassination attempts before his impeachment. He stated that on August 30, undercover police in Kisumu attempted to poison his food but were thwarted.

A second attempt allegedly occurred on September 3 in Nyeri, where NIS officers reportedly tried to poison food meant for him and Kikuyu elders. After reporting the incidents, he claims the impeachment plot was initiated.
The impeached deputy president lamented that, unlike other Kenya Kwanza leaders like Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula, he didn’t demand a formal agreement with Ruto, choosing instead to trust him due to their shared Christian values.
Gachagua described the past year as one of immense hardship, claiming ongoing persecution since he assumed office. He alleged that some of Ruto’s allies have been inquiring about his deteriorating health while he was in the hospital, even celebrating his condition.
Drawing a parallel with the late Kenneth Matiba, Gachagua suggested that Ruto’s treatment of him resembles the persecution Matiba faced under former President Daniel Moi’s regime, which led to Matiba’s debilitating stroke.
Gachagua believes his ousting is due to his outspoken criticism of government policies, particularly the eviction of people from riparian land and his opposition to the lease of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the Adani Group.
He stated that he is being punished for standing up for the truth.
