Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has criticized the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, calling it a flawed, politically motivated process.

During an interview with Spice FM, Thang’wa questioned why impeachment proceedings were initiated before exploring other legal and political avenues to address the allegations against Gachagua.

Thang’wa claimed that both the National Assembly and Senate impeachment procedures were tainted by bribery and intimidation. He noted that some legislators were coerced with threats, including pressure from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and investigations into their businesses.

“When the government wants to find something, they will bring up all sorts of allegations,” Thang’wa said.

According to the Kiambu Senator, some lawmakers attempted to paint Gachagua negatively to justify the impeachment. He described the process as “hypocrisy of the highest order,” asserting that personal interests and political pressure drove it.

He argued that some legislators focused more on protecting their business interests than seeking justice.

Thang’wa has been vocal in supporting Gachagua, contending that the accusations attempt to undermine the Deputy President's influence within the government.

He believes the impeachment motion lacks substantial evidence and is a ploy by political adversaries to create divisions within the ruling administration.

He praised Gachagua as a leader who has consistently championed the interests of Kenyans, not just those from the Mt. Kenya region. Thang’wa dismissed the impeachment claims as political theatrics that weakened Gachagua’s position.

Meanwhile, Gachagua has sought to challenge the impeachment in court. President William Ruto has nominated Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to replace Gachagua, and the nomination is now awaiting the court’s decision.
