The Employment and Labour Relations Court has ruled that the current lecturers' strike is unprotected and urged union leaders to resume negotiations.
Members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) initiated the strike on Tuesday, pressing the government to meet demands outlined in the 2012-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The court has now advised lecturers to engage in discussions with the government to work toward a mutually agreeable Return-to-Work formula.
UASU and other involved parties have been given a 14-day period to submit their responses on the issue, with a follow-up court mention scheduled for November 28, 2024. Learning activities at public universities have now been stalled for over 24 hours, as lecturers insist they won’t return to teaching until their demands, particularly payment of outstanding dues, are addressed.
