Over 198 residents of Kwachocha area in Malindi are demanding immediate compensation for their land, which was acquired by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to facilitate the expansion of Malindi International Airport. The residents have filed a case in the Malindi Environment and Lands Court, seeking to halt any potential takeover of KAA assets by the Adani Group until they are compensated.
Represented by their advocate Vincent Mogaka, the residents expressed concern that if the expected Adani takeover occurs at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) next month, it could impact KAA assets across the country, potentially jeopardizing their compensation.
The residents’ earlier motion, dated October 8, 2024, noted that their compensation has been delayed for over 15 years, and they fear losing these funds entirely if the Adani Group assumes operational control.
Justice Mwangi Njoroge from the Malindi Environment and Lands Court has scheduled a ruling on the matter for December 3, 2024. Meanwhile, KAA’s lawyer, Adhoch Emeli, opposed the residents' application, clarifying that KAA’s arrangement only involves handing over operations at JKIA to the Adani Group.
