More than 300 families in Nyadina village, Nyakach, have been displaced after River Sondu Miriu overflowed its banks due to heavy overnight rains.

The flooding has wreaked havoc on livelihoods, destroying over 500 acres of crops and sweeping away livestock.

Residents of the submerged Kisumu County village now rely on boats for movement, with many wading through water after pathways disappeared under the deluge. A local farmer, Ruth Otieno lamented the loss of her beans and farmland and expressed concern over how her children will resume school in January.

Another resident, Alfred Njoga, recounted the loss of livestock, household items, and essential kitchenware, pleading for urgent support with cooking utensils and other necessities.

The stagnant floodwaters have also contaminated water sources, heightening the risk of malaria and waterborne diseases, especially for children and pregnant women. “Diarrhea is widespread, and families are suffering. Malaria cases have surged, and access to healthcare is a challenge,” Njoga added.

Residents are calling on leaders to take immediate action by providing medical assistance and constructing protective dykes along the river. “Those we voted for should visit and address this crisis,” urged Roselyne Akoth.
