President William Ruto has officially appointed Ahmed Issack Hassan, the former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), as the new Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). The announcement was made through a gazette notice dated December 5, 2024, just a month after Hassan was nominated for the role.

Hassan, who served as IEBC Chair between November 2011 and October 2016, will take over from outgoing IPOA Chair Anne Makori. The notice stated:

*"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 11 (8) of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint— Ahmed Issack Hassan to be the chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority."*

In addition, President Ruto appointed individuals to key roles in other state commissions. Charles Orinda Dulo has been named the Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ). Former Starehe MP Charles Njagua Kanyi, popularly known as Jaguar, and Dorothy Jemator Kimengech will serve as members of the CAJ board.

The President also announced the appointment of new IPOA board members, including Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Dr. Micah Onyiego Nyakego, Boniface Kipkemoi Samati, Dr. Annette Mbogoh, John Muchiri Nyaga, Ken Williams Nyakomitah, and Jackline Lukalo Mwenesi.

Additionally, former Isiolo Woman Representative Rehema Dida Jaldesa has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), with Michael Mbithuka Nzomo joining the commission as a board member.

These appointments follow parliamentary approval of the nominees, fulfilling the required processes outlined last month.
