Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto, accusing him of disrespecting voters who supported him in the last election.
Speaking at Bahati Church in Ichamara, Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County, Gachagua condemned Ruto’s alleged tendency to insult Kenyans opposing controversial government policies.
“Respect this community for their generosity toward you,” Gachagua remarked, adding that Ruto now associates with new allies who insult and demean Kenyans at public rallies. He pointed to the backlash surrounding cattle vaccination programs, urging the President to listen to citizens’ concerns instead of dismissing them with disparaging remarks.
“When people share their views, there’s no need to insult them. Just listen, even if you disagree,” Gachagua stated. He criticized Ruto for labeling some leaders from the Mt. Kenya region as tribalists, emphasizing that the region had overwhelmingly supported Ruto despite ethnic differences.

The former deputy president also alleged a government-led plot to assassinate him, referencing an attack in Limuru on November 28. He claimed Kikuyu youths were used to stage the incident to portray internal community conflict. Gachagua accused the government of covering up the incident, pointing fingers at Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja for failing to act against the perpetrators.
He also highlighted what he sees as the current administration's betrayal and humiliation of the Mt. Kenya region. Gachagua promised to spearhead a regional political revival, announcing plans to reveal his strategy in January 2025.
“This community does not forgive betrayal—it is a taboo,” he declared. Gachagua vowed to restore the dignity and independence of Mt. Kenya, signaling the region’s intent to reclaim its political influence before the next election.
