The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the payment of December salaries and all pending arrears dating back to September 2024.
The union’s demands, announced on January 1, 2025, come after repeated unfulfilled promises, including a directive from the Ministry of Education to implement the salary increments outlined in the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
If the government fails to meet these demands, UASU has warned of a nationwide strike starting January 15, 2025.
The controversy erupted when university staff received their December paychecks without the promised increments.
This was despite a September directive from Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala instructing immediate implementation of salaries and increments. University management has blamed the delay on a lack of funds from the government.

Union leaders have also called for the resignation of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, accusing him of failing to ensure compliance with the CBA. UASU has vowed that the upcoming strike will be more intense, with heightened pressure on the government to resolve the issue.
