Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has hit back at National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah for accusing him of involvement in abductions and killings during his tenure as Rift Valley Regional Commissioner.
The allegations stem from bodies discovered in River Yala in 2022.
Natembeya labeled Ichung’wah’s claims as baseless and irresponsible in a strongly worded statement.
He defended his track record, stating that he served diligently and retired honorably without scandals. He emphasized that his integrity and dedication earned him the trust of Trans Nzoia residents, leading to his election as governor.
“George Natembeya served Kenyans with honesty and hard work. I resigned from my position without any stain on my record. My leadership is what endeared me to the people who made me their governor,” Natembeya said.
The governor criticized Kenya Kwanza leaders for targeting him instead of addressing pressing national issues, including the recent surge in abductions and killings. He accused them of deflecting responsibility and lacking emotional intelligence.
“I was insulted for holding the President accountable on the issue of abductions, which is a duty for all leaders. This should not be misconstrued as undermining the President,” he added.
Natembeya called for adherence to the rule of law and condemned extrajudicial abductions, urging leaders to focus on solutions rather than personal attacks.
Ichung’wah, speaking at a funeral in Bungoma, had accused Natembeya of orchestrating abductions and killings during his time in office, claiming he worked with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to sow division. He alleged that Natembeya was directly responsible for the River Yala incidents and other atrocities.
Natembeya dismissed the accusations, reiterating his commitment to serving Kenyans with integrity.
