The National Police Service (NPS) has refuted claims surrounding the death of 24-year-old Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti, stating he was not abducted but was a victim of a hit-and-run accident.

Earlier reports suggested Mwiti, alleged to be an activist, disappeared under unclear circumstances before his body was found at Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary on January 2, 2025.

In a statement released on January 5, NPS clarified that Mwiti’s death was unrelated to activism or abduction. Based on a report from Mwiti's mother on January 4, 2025, the statement outlined events leading to his demise.

Police revealed that Mwiti was last seen on November 11, 2024, and his disappearance was reported at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15. His body was discovered shortly after midnight on November 12 by Juja Traffic Police following a hit-and-run accident along the Thika Super Highway near Spur Mall. He was riding a hired motorcycle, registration KMFG 807C, at the time of the incident.

Due to a lack of identification documents, his body was initially marked as unknown and transferred to General Kago Hospital Mortuary. A fingerprint analysis conducted on November 21 positively identified him as Ibrahim Mwiti.

NPS also noted that Mwiti’s mother swore an affidavit on January 2, 2025, requesting a post-mortem examination be waived in line with their religious beliefs. He was buried the following day.

The police cautioned against spreading unverified claims, which could incite public unrest, especially amid ongoing concerns about alleged abductions in the country.
