The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has pledged to compensate Kenya for damages caused to its embassy in Kinshasa following an attack by local protestors.
The incident occurred on Tuesday as demonstrators expressed anger over the escalating conflict in Eastern DRC, where M23 rebels are advancing toward the capital.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi condemned the attack, noting that diplomatic channels have been activated to address the situation. Mudavadi revealed he had engaged Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, DRC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who acknowledged the incident and promised swift action to restore order.
“Kenya strongly condemns the attacks on our Embassy in Kinshasa, which included looting and destruction of property. Similar acts targeted the Uganda Embassy, with plans to storm the South African, USA, and Belgian embassies,” said Mudavadi.
He emphasized that such actions violate international law, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Convention mandates host nations to safeguard foreign missions, protect their premises from harm, and ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.

“The violent looting and destruction at our Embassy contravene the Vienna Convention, specifically Articles 22(2) and 29, which affirm the inviolability of mission premises and personnel,” he added.
Mudavadi criticized the inaction of DRC security forces during the unrest but acknowledged Minister Wagner’s assurances of compensation and measures to secure Kenyan diplomats and their families.
Kenya has urged DRC authorities to uphold their obligations under international agreements to prevent future violations and ensure peace. The incident highlights the fragile security situation in the DRC as the government grapples with growing rebel threats in the East.
