President William Ruto walked away from Citizen TV journalist Olive Burrows when she attempted to get his opinion on Raila Odinga’s prospects of securing the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

The encounter, captured on video, shows Burrows asking the president, “Do you think Raila Odinga stands a chance?” Ruto, without stopping, turned to her briefly and responded, “You relax,” before continuing on his way. His response—or lack thereof—has since become the subject of intense online discussions.

Some interpreted his reaction as a sign of confidence in Odinga’s bid, while others speculated that Ruto was avoiding delving into the politics surrounding the AUC seat. A social media user commented, “Ruto anajua mambo iko sawa, that is why amesema you relax.”

Some suggest that President William Ruto’s decision to walk away rather than address the question signals confidence in Kenya’s diplomatic efforts. Others interpret it as a strategic move to avoid amplifying Raila Odinga’s bid or stirring political tensions.

Raila, the seasoned opposition leader and former Prime Minister, is vying to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat as Chair of the African Union Commission (AUC). While his campaign has the full backing of the Kenyan government, the ultimate decision rests with the AU’s heads of state.

Kenyans are keen to see whether Ruto’s confidence—or perceived indifference—will translate into a successful outcome for Raila on the continental stage.
