At least 25 people, including children and adults, have been hospitalized in Masindoni, Chepalungu, Bomet County, after eating meat from a cow that had died days earlier.
According to Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga, the cow had been sick for two weeks before it died. Villagers reportedly slaughtered the carcass and distributed the meat, leading to severe food poisoning symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Authorities, including area chief Richard Koech and Nyumba Kumi members, mobilized boda boda riders to rush the affected individuals to a private medical facility at the Ndanai Trading Center.
Some victims have been treated and discharged, while others remain under medical care. However, officials revealed that several people who consumed the contaminated meat are still hiding in the village, possibly fearing repercussions.
Following the incident, police arrested Janeth Terer, the 39-year-old owner of the dead cow, for allowing its meat to be distributed in the community. Interestingly, she admitted that none of her family members ate the meat.
