Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, is facing pressure amid confusion over which coalition holds the majority in Parliament. The dispute erupted after Wetangula declared Kenya Kwanza as the majority, prompting protests from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Azimio lawmakers argued that they had more affiliate parties and deserved the majority position, heightening tension in the House.

For months, the confusion persisted, with heated debates and political tension as both sides claimed to be the majority. Wetangula faced criticism for his decision, with Azimio leaders accusing him of bias. Some even questioned his impartiality as Speaker, saying he favored Kenya Kwanza, which is led by President William Ruto. The political standoff made it difficult for Parliament to conduct its business smoothly.

However, the air has now been cleared after Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu released an official report confirming that Azimio has more political parties than Kenya Kwanza. According to the report, Azimio has 21 parties, while Kenya Kwanza has only 15. This clarification puts Raila Odinga’s coalition in a stronger position in terms of party numbers, easing the pressure on Wetangula.

The announcement also follows a court ruling that recognized Azimio as the majority coalition, contradicting Wetangula’s earlier declaration. With the Registrar’s confirmation, Wetangula is no longer under pressure, as it is now clear who has the majority in Parliament. However, despite having more parties, Azimio has fewer parliamentary seats compared to Kenya Kwanza, which still controls the National Assembly.

This development has changed the political scene, with Raila now seen as leading the largest coalition by party numbers. Political analysts believe this gives him more influence in national politics as the 2027 elections approach. Meanwhile, Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza faces the challenge of maintaining control with fewer coalition partners. The big question now is how Raila will use this advantage and how Ruto will respond.
