Authorities in Lubinu, Mumias East, Kakamega County, have apprehended three suspects concerning a major counterfeit agricultural products operation.
The suspects were arrested on Tuesday after police seized 12,835 kilograms of fake fertilizer and 396 kilograms of counterfeit maize seeds from a residence in the area.
Acting on intelligence, officers from Shianda Police Station raided the home of Asma Mukoya, 38, in Musoma Village, approximately four kilometers from the station. During the operation, law enforcement found an Isuzu FRR lorry (Reg. No. KDL 120K) being loaded with the suspected counterfeit products.
Additionally, officers recovered a weighing machine, three rolls of sewing thread, a repackaging machine, three unsealed 50kg bags of fertilizer and several empty sacks used for repackaging.
Following the bust, police arrested Asma Mukoya, along with Rodgers Otundo (the lorry driver) and Milzadeck Meja (a suspected broker). The three remain in police custody as authorities finalize investigations before presenting them in court.
This seizure highlights growing concerns about counterfeit farm inputs in Kenya, which pose significant risks to farmers and food security.
Authorities urge farmers to remain vigilant and purchase certified seeds and fertilizers from reputable dealers.
