President William Ruto recently discussed the events that led to the impeachment of his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, attributing the fallout to internal conflicts within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
During a roundtable interview with vernacular stations, Ruto explained that tensions began shortly after he assumed office, with Gachagua clashing with key political figures, including blogger Dennis Itumbi and MPs Ndindi Nyoro and Kimani Ichung'wah.
Ruto shared that he confronted Gachagua, questioning the reason behind his disputes with Itumbi and other young leaders, calling such conflicts unnecessary. The President emphasized that Gachagua's confrontational approach caused significant friction with lawmakers, eventually leading to his impeachment.
Ruto clarified that he was not involved in Gachagua's removal, stating that the decision followed legal procedures. He explained that the MPs, feeling threatened by Gachagua’s tactics, took action first.
Additionally, Ruto revealed a significant demand from Gachagua, who reportedly asked for Ksh. 10 billion to support the President’s political agenda in the Mt. Kenya region. Ruto rejected the request, asserting that if his political future were limited to one term, he would accept it.

Despite these tensions, Ruto downplayed concerns ahead of his upcoming nine-county tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
The President said the tour, starting on Tuesday, would allow him to update voters on his administration's progress.
Ruto also responded to Gachagua’s criticisms, highlighting his achievements, particularly infrastructure projects like the Marua-Wamunyoro road, which he initiated. He made a subtle jab at Gachagua, implying that his critic benefited from the projects he now denounced.
