Two middle-aged men are feared dead after being swept away by flash floods on Thursday evening in Kiprichait, Bomet County.

The tragic incident occurred as the pair attempted to cross a wooden bridge partially submerged by rising waters.

According to Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga, the men were walking along the riverbank when they chose to cross the flooded bridge. One of them reportedly lost his footing and fell into the raging waters. The second man, in an attempt to rescue him, was also dragged away by the strong current.

David Rotich, the area assistant chief, confirmed that the victims were attending a nearby funeral and were not familiar with the local terrain, which may have contributed to their decision to risk crossing the dangerous bridge.

Residents quickly launched a search and rescue effort, but heavy rainfall and the surging water levels hindered progress. So far, the bodies have not been recovered.

“This is a dangerous rescue mission that requires careful coordination with professional divers,” said Rotich.

Authorities urge the public to avoid flooded pathways and exercise caution during the rainy season.
