Yussy Ali Abdi, a 25-year-old trader from Mombasa, has been confirmed dead after entering a building that was later demolished over safety concerns.

The tragic incident occurred on April 10, 2025, in central Mombasa, where the nine-story structure had been declared unsafe for nearby residents.

Yussy was initially reported missing before authorities confirmed his death.

According to his family spokesperson, Abdul Rahman, CCTV footage showed Yussy walking around the building, and he eventually entered it, never to be seen again.

Witnesses shared that the footage captured him close to the building just moments before it collapsed.

The building, located along Abdel Nasser Road, had been showing signs of danger, with cracks appearing in its ground floor pillars.

Due to these risks, a multi-agency team led by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) decided to demolish the structure on April 9, 2025.

Reports indicate that the building was brought down to prevent any potential accidents that could harm residents living nearby.

As Yussy's family searched for him during the hours after he went missing, they were filled with worry and confusion.

They had approached KDF personnel for assistance; however, they were informed that rescue efforts could not begin until the building was safely demolished.

This delay left the family feeling frustrated, as they were eager to find Yussy.

Honorable Zamzam Mohammed, the Mombasa Woman Representative, offered her heartfelt condolences following Yussy’s passing.

She confirmed his death, noting that she had contacted authorities to seek information after he was reported missing.

In her message of sympathy, she remembered Yussy as a humble and kind young man who had been a dedicated supporter of her political campaigns.

She added that his loss would be deeply felt by the Marikiti trading community and the wider Mombasa public.
