Detectives probing the shocking assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were have arrested the suspected gunman behind the high-profile murder.

The suspect, identified as Isaac Kuria—also known by the alias “Kush”—was apprehended in Isebania, near the Kenya-Tanzania border, while allegedly attempting to flee the country.

Investigators believe Kuria executed the deadly shooting along Nairobi’s Valley Road before initiating a carefully planned escape across multiple counties. According to sources familiar with the investigation, Kuria is connected to criminal syndicates operating in Nairobi and had reportedly traveled to the Central Business District with a single objective: to eliminate the legislator.

Authorities say Kuria closely followed MP Were’s movements before ambushing and fatally shooting him while he was stuck in traffic. After the assassination, the suspect allegedly fled to Mihango, where he disposed of the firearm used in the murder. The weapon has since been recovered by law enforcement.

Kuria then continued his escape by motorcycle to Narok and later boarded a public service vehicle to Isebania. He is believed to have been coordinating with a relative based in Tanzania as part of his escape plan.

DCI officers, who had been monitoring communications between Kuria and several other suspects already in custody, tracked him to a local lodging in Isebania, where he was arrested alongside another suspect. Both individuals were transported to Nairobi and are expected to appear before the JKIA Law Courts on Monday.

With Kuria’s arrest, the number of suspects in custody rises to 11. Those already detained include MP Were’s bodyguard Allan Omondi, his driver Walter Owino, and William Imoli, who is believed to have been a key planner and financier of the hit.

Other suspects include prominent businessman and politician Phillip Aroko, Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng—both suspected of financing the operation—as well as Edwin Oduor and Dennis Manyasi.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that ongoing efforts are underway to apprehend additional individuals suspected to be part of the broader assassination conspiracy. Authorities are also reviewing financial records linked to the suspects, which may help uncover the motive behind the murder.

Charles Ong’ondo Were was brutally gunned down in what detectives believe was a meticulously planned political assassination.

Investigations are ongoing as security agencies tighten the net around the powerful network suspected to be behind the killing.
