About 4,000 people in Kajido south sub-County, Lenkisim warm have received relief food to cushion them against the effects of adverse drought being experienced in the Country.
The issuance of the relief food is through a partnership between Carrefour supermarket, Kenya Red Cross and Capwell Industries, which distributed 8,000 bags of relief food to the drought-affected families in a ‘Save a Life’ Campaign.
Each of the 4,000 families received two bags of food aid containing 10 kilograms of green grams, rice and maize through the initiative.
Carrefour Supermarket East Africa Regional Director of Majid Al Futtaim noted that the donations show a commitment to provide much-needed aid to families facing famine due to the ongoing drought in the country.
We recognise and appreciate the goodwill of our customers, who turned out in numbers to support the initiative through their generous donations,” he said.
The distribution comes after a two-month campaign that took place in every Carrefour location nationwide and garnered approximately Kes5 million in donations.
Customers were invited to purchase food hampers during the food donation drive at a discounted price of Kes 599, with Carrefour and Capwell Industries covering the difference to make them more accessible to Kenyans who wanted to donate. For every 10 bags sold, Carrefour provided an additional bag.
The distribution follows a two-month-long exercise in all Carrefour stores in the country that raised almost Kes 5 million worth of donations.
During the food donation drive, customers were encouraged to buy and donate a food hamper at the subsidized price of Sh 599, with Carrefour and Capwell Industries covering the difference to make them more affordable for Kenyans who wished to donate. Additionally, Carrefour donated one more bag for every 10 bags sold.
In 22 of the 23 ASAL counties, the drought situation is still critical, according to Dr Asha Mohammed, Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society.
This is because the eagerly anticipated October to December 2022 short rains arrived late and performed poorly, in addition to four previous consecutive failed rain seasons.
