A suspect has been arrested in the murder of NHIF staff 46-year-old Lilian Waithera, who was shot in broad daylight in the central business district.
Nairobi Police Commander Mr Adamson Bungei confirmed that the suspect's name is Julius Kimani Mwangi. According to a police report, National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) staff collapsed and died on Kaunda Street, CBD
Ms Waithera was with a colleague in the CBD on their way home after having walked from the upper hill. she collapsed on the pavement. And her colleagues did not know that she was shot. Their frantic calls for help went unanswered, and the ambulance arrived 20 minutes later. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pathologists conducted a postmodern on her body and revealed that Waithera was shot from an elevated angle into her collar bone and lodged into her lungs, causing massive bleeding. Waithera, who had worked at NHIF for 15 years and was described by colleagues as the go-to person because she was well-versed in the operations of the government agency, was walking with Ms Damaris Achieng' when she complained of chest pain.

According to Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei, the bullet that struck Ms Waithera was fired by someone on top of one of the buildings. At the scene, there are two high-rise buildings.
The apparent path of the bullet, as captured in the post-mortem report, can point to which building the shot came from based on the location with blood stains. The incident happened at 3;30pm.
The family of the slain worker described her as truthful and would not keep a secret. Her husband, Mr Paul Mbogo, said that he is unaware that his wife was a witness in any case and that if that were the case, she would have let him know.
