The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Noordin Haji has asked the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to do a thorough investigation into the alleged sexual assault happening at the tea farms owned by Unilever and James Finlay & Co.
this order comes after the BBC aired a documentary called “Sex for Work: The True Cost of Our Tea” the documentary revealed the appalling working conditions and the sexual exploitation that women working in the Kericho tea farms
Their supervisors and managers, according to the documentary, exposed the women to rape, sexual abuse, compelled or indecent acts, sexual harassment, and the intentional transmission of HIV or any other existing sexually transmitted disease.
in the letter, the DPP wrote to the inspector general of police, he stated that he was complying with the Kenyan Constitution, which gives him the authority to direct investigations into any alleged offence.

“Accordingly, pursuant to Article 157 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, you are hereby directed to undertake comprehensive investigations into the allegations of rape, sexual assault, compelled or indecent acts, sexual harassment and deliberate transmission of HIV or any other life threatening sexually transmitted disease, as highlighted by the BBC Africa Eye Documentary,” DPP wrote.
nordin haji gave the police seven days to investigate the matter and report their findings.in the documentrary, women who were sexualy assaulted had reported that they reported the matter to the police and the adminstration at the tea farms but nothing was done about it and nothing was done about the matter but instead they were threatened to be fired.
