Nairobi's streets have increased security as the Azimio protests get underway.

The coalition's leader, Raila Odinga, urged Kenyans to abide by his "directive" — Monday, March 20, 2023, is a national holiday to hold the government accountable — on Sunday in response to police charges that today's protest by the opposition group was unlawful.

Azimio's followers gathered on some streets in various areas of the nation's capital city for the callout.

For instance, women have joined the campaign wearing sufurias along Wabera Street.

They sang, "The government is arresting people while they do not have bread," in Nyinyi mnashika watu hivyo na hakuna unga.

One of Mr Raila's demands is that the Kenya Kwanza government address the high cost of living.

Four demonstrators were recently handcuffed and bundled into a police vehicle outside the Supreme Court.

According to Nairobi News, chaos broke out in Kibra as the police force fought with the protesters.

Due to the morning brawl, security personnel were obliged to use tear gas canisters to disperse the angry protesters.

One of Raila Odinga's strongholds and a popular destination in Nairobi is Kibra.

Police officials guarding the area dispersed a group of picketers assembled at the Kencon Matatu Terminus as the tension started to build.

More than five people have been taken into custody at the matatu terminus on Moi Avenue.

Mr Raila Odinga wants the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who resigned and were fired due to pressure after the general elections last year to be reinstated and demanding the appointment of new commissioners be halted. The rising cost of living is addressed.

The chairman of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has stated that the protests will continue until President William Ruto's administration complies with the demands.
