According to officials, on Monday, three school children and three adults suffered fatal injuries when a gunman opened fire at a preschool in Nashville, Tennessee.

The victims have been named Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, 9 years old, as well as Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hill, 61. The three adults were all employed at the school. Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old Nashville woman, was recognised as the shooter and had been armed with at least two deadly weapons and a handgun, according to police.

On Twitter, the city officers confirmed "an active shooter event" at The Covenant School, saying the shooter was slain in an exchange with police.

The Nashville Fire Department verified "multiple patients," with NBC news media and a hospital spokesperson confirming the death of three children.

"Three pediatric patients were transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, all having suffered gunshot wounds," Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokesperson John Howser said. "All three were pronounced dead after arrival."

The Covenant School is a private Christian institution hosting elementary school children up to 12.

According to Don Aaron, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, police entered the first story of the school facility. They started clearing it when they overheard gunfire on the second level. in a statement issued late Monday night, and the officers moved upstairs. They saw the assailant firing at arriving police vehicles. At that moment, Aaron said, they "engaged" the shooter, who was killed by two of the five responding police officers.
