Amin Mohamed, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) chief, joined detectives on Wednesday at the Redwood Apartments in Kasarani, where interior designer Geoffrey "Jeff" Mwathi died mysteriously in late February.
The boss and his investigators attempted to reconstruct the crime scene, where young Jeff was said to have died while visiting famous Kikuyu musician DJ Fatxo's house.
It comes ahead of Mwathi's body being exhumed on Friday to fill in the gaps about the cause of his death.
"During the restructuring, the DCI Headquarters Homicide squad and Crime Scene persons from the DCI National Forensic Laboratory decided to seek to identify gaps that the exhumation is expected to fill once DNA and Toxicology analyses are completed," the DCI stated in a statement.

Mohamed wants the investigation into Ngugi's death to be expedited to determine if there was any foul play.
On February 22, Ngugi allegedly fell from the 10th-floor window of DJ Fatxo's Redwood apartment, real name Lawrence Njuguna, while partying with his friends.
According to reports, Ngugi met the entertainer hours earlier to discuss an interior design gig DJ Fatxo wanted him to do for a fee.
Following the conclusion of the business meeting, the pair went out for drinks at four different clubs in and around Nairobi.
At around 3 a.m., CCTV footage from the Redwood apartments captured Ngugi, DJ Fatxo, his driver, and three unidentified women returning to the apartment.
A relative of the DJ arrived at the residence minutes later in a different vehicle, according to a police report.
The DJ was then seen leaving his apartment with the three women around 4 a.m., while Ngugi remained with the other two men.
A few moments later, CCTV footage captured Ngugi falling to his death.
