The National Police Service (NPS) has denied on social media that its officers are collaborating with goons to incite violence during the ongoing protests by the opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NPS expressed concern that some netizens were spreading false information about police involvement in anti-government protests.
Thus, the multi-agency body warned the public against spreading misinformation on social media platforms, warning that it could spread fear or tarnish the public image of the men and women in blue.
"NPS has mentioned with major concern, a lot of misinformation making the rounds via social media amid the current Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance protests in Nairobi, the latest of which is the falsehood that NPS is abetting recruited goons to cause mayhem in Nairobi," the statement read.

"We wish to draw the general public's attention to the fact that such unfounded and malicious claims are not only intended to instill unnecessary fear in society, but are also deliberate attempts to tarnish the image of the National Police Service."
As a result, NPS reassured the public of its commitment to serving Kenyans fairly.
"As a law enforcement agency, we wish to reaffirm our commitment to carrying out our constitutional mandate, which is to serve and protect without fear or favor, while adhering to the rule of law and the utmost respect for human rights," the statement continued.
