Members of Parliament are set to spend millions of money on luxury amid cash flow challenges the government is facing.
This is after the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) invited individuals to submit bids for the choppers, fine dining, and travel, among other services, through a notice.
“The Kenya National Assembly invites applications from interested and eligible bidders for registering suppliers, consultants and contractors for use on an ‘as and when required basis’ in the Financial Years 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 ending on 30th June 2025,” PSC said.
“Completed tender documents enclosed in a plain sealed envelope, marked with the tender number and name should be deposited in the Tender Box at 13th Floor, Protection House, Nairobi,” it added.
It also seeks suppliers for auctions, travel and air ticketing, calling cards, furniture, and fittings.
“Tenders will be opened immediately thereafter in the presence of the tenderers who choose to attend or their representatives at Protection House, 13th floor at the Junction of Parliament Road and Haile Selassie Avenue, Nairobi,” it added.
This comes when President William Ruto’s government faces huge financial pressure amid salary delays for civil servants.
On April 10, the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u warned civil servants of a looming delay in the processing of salaries.
He attributed the delay to the financial crunch that the state was facing amid depressed revenue growth and constrained access to the capital market.
Government employees' monthly pay accumulates to Kes50 billion, and Kes8 billion for pension payments.
As of March 2023, the national treasury had accumulated debt repayments of Kes150 billion.
