Francis Atwoli, secretary general of the COTU, has asked former president Uhuru Kenyatta to leave office amicably to promote peace rather than engage in political activism.
Atwoli asked Uhuru to serve as a statesman and seek to bring leaders and all Kenyans together in a speech he delivered on Monday at Uhuru Gardens during this year's Labor Day Celebrations, which President William Ruto attended.
Atwoli said that when a president retires, he should be a peacemaker, not an activist.

Days before Atwoli's comments, Uhuru paid an unexpected visit to the Jubilee party headquarters in Kileleshwa following a fight between two factions of the former ruling party.
In his statements during the visit, Uhuru advised party members who wanted to leave the organization to do so amicably and pleaded with President Ruto and his administration to let the organization manage its internal leadership disputes.
Due to this, Uhuru is in hot water; according to attorneys and political experts, a retired president shouldn't be involved in politics or hold any role inside a political party six months after leaving office. However, Uhuru's political rights, according to Azimio camp leaders, are protected by the Constitution.
