In one of the worst suspected food poisoning instances in the nation, 15 members of a family in rural Namibia have perished after consuming poisoned porridge, authorities said on Wednesday.

According to local media, the extremely poor family had porridge prepared from leftover grains from producing alcoholic beverages.

The victims, who were part of a family of 21, resided in a village in Kavango East's northeast when they became ill after dinner on Saturday and were taken to the hospital, according to authorities.

According to police spokesman Kauna Shikwambi, as of Wednesday, 15 people had passed away.

According to Shikwambi, this is the largest number of deaths that have so far been linked to ingesting potentially harmful substances.

She stated that an inquiry had been started, and autopsies and lab testing were still pending findings.
