Mandera County MCAs have slammed the Compensation and Remuneration Commission's (SRC) decision to raise their gross compensation by Ksh.10,000, calling the move unfair.
The SRC notified the pay increase, which will be implemented in two phases, via a circular on Wednesday, adding that MCAs will earn Ksh.154,481 beginning in July, up from Ksh.144,375.
County Assembly speakers' wages will be increased to Ksh.562,312 from Ksh.525,525 in the current fiscal year but will rise to Ksh.601,674 in the fiscal year 2024/25.
Deputy Speakers will get Ksh.231,722 a month beginning in July, up from Ksh.216,563, with the figure expected to grow to Ksh.247,943 in the 2024/25 fiscal year, while majority and minority leaders will earn Ksh.191,324 beginning in July and Ksh.204,717 in the next fiscal year.

The Mandera MCAs oppose the planned wage increase primarily because county speakers, deputy speakers, and majority and minority leaders are all MCAs.
"Where is the transparency and fairness in the circular issued by the SRC yesterday?" How can they raise compensation for certain MCAs while laying off others?" On Thursday, one of Mandera's MCAs posed for Citizen Digital.
"One thing the SRC must understand is that the majority leader, minority leader, speaker, and deputy speaker are all MCAs first and foremost."
In response to the compensation reductions, the Mandera MCAs asked their counterparts from other counties to stand down.
"The Commission has only raised the basic salary by Ksh.10,000 to cover the 1.5 per cent Kenya Kwanza government housing levy." As a result, we urge all MCAs in the country to come out and completely reject the new SRC plans," another MCA stated.
