President William Ruto’s four escort team members sustained injuries after their official car rolled at Mlima Nugu along the Moi South Lake road in Naivasha.
According to police, the incident happened as the car raced back to Nairobi, from Naivasha, where Ruto had gone earlier to flag off the 2023 WRC Safari Rally, a precursor of the main rallying event this weekend.
Witnesses said the driver of the presidential escort unit motorcade vehicle lost control while trying to negotiate a sharp corner on the route.
Ruto was not in the motorcade, police said. He flew to and from Naivasha for the Safari Rally event. He was informed of the incident. He had flown to the Loldia spectator's point using a chopper, police said.
The scene was quickly cordoned off by other heavily armed presidential security guards and members of the elite General Service Unit (GSU) who had been informed.
The injured were picked up and taken to the hospital. They were admitted in stable condition, police said.
The presidential escort unit and presidential guard usually guard the president. Advance teams had driven to the place to wait for him.
