President William Ruto nominated Renson Mulele Ingonga as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

The Head of State stated that Ingonga is a qualified attorney who will serve with honour in a memo sent to the National Assembly on August 17.

Ruto consequently requested that the National Assembly's members thoroughly investigate the nomination in accordance with the law.

Ingonga was one of the other 30 candidates chosen for interviews, which lasted for more than a week in Nairobi.

President Ruto ultimately received a list of three qualified candidates from the selection committee, and he chose Ingonga.

At the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Ingonga serves as an Assistant Director. He is the ODPP's Director of the North Eastern Area and the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Unit.

He has worked for the prosecutions office for about ten years as a career prosecutor.

He completed his studies at the University of Nairobi, obtaining a Bachelor of Laws degree, and later pursued a Master of Laws in International Criminal Law from the University of Cape Town. Additionally, he holds accreditation as an authorized arbitrator and mediator.

Ingonga has extensive experience in criminal law, with a particular focus on corruption and economic crimes.

He is a passionate advocate for justice and human rights. He is committed to ensuring that the law is applied fairly and impartially, regardless of the circumstances.

The panel underscored qualifications and experience required for the position of DPP, which include a law degree from a recognised university.

Ingonga also met the requirement of being admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and having served for at least 10 years as a professionally qualified magistrate.

Ingonga will be in charge of Kenya's national prosecuting body, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), as DPP.

Except for military crimes, which the Director of Military Prosecutions handles, he will be in charge of prosecuting all criminal cases in the nation.
