Eight people have been killed and several others injured after the matatu they were traveling in collided head-on with an oncoming truck at Mlima Kiu in Makueni on Thursday night on the Nairobi- Mombasa Highway.
Makueni Police Commander Barbanas Ng'eno confirmed the 11 p.m. accident and claimed that eight passengers died on the spot due to the head-on collision.
The matatu was headed to Nairobi from Loitoktok while the truck was going to Mombasa.

As investigations into the tragedy continued, the remains of the deceased were taken to Kilungu Hospital, while the debris of the vehicles was towed to Salama Police Station.

According to Voi OCPD Bernstein Shari, who confirmed the tragedy at around 4.20 p.m., 12 passengers perished on the scene after the matatu they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck.
The 14-seater matatu belonging to Chania Genesis Sacco was traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa while the cargo truck was traveling to Nairobi.
