Under the 'Green Army' program, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) is hiring 4,000 tree nursery personnel.
According to KFS, the Green Army is intended to significantly contribute to President William Ruto's goal of planting 15 billion tree seedlings over the next ten years.
"Green Army workers will assist in the national tree growing and ecosystem restoration program by raising tree seedlings, planting trees, silvicultural operations in forests, and other forestry duties," the government entity said in a press release, adding that applications had been received.
KFS has also stated its intention to use technology in forest monitoring by employing drones.

"Data-driven decision-making will be ensured, as will increased efficiency in tree planting and maintenance."
To capitalize on technology, KFS also helped build the Jaza Miti App, a smartphone application that tracks tree planting progress nationwide.
"The primary goal of the Jaza Miti App is to provide information that enhances science-based smart greening activities by stakeholders in forest-based enterprises," according to KFS.
KFS operates 300 tree nurseries under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry and wants to create 41 more nurseries, especially in ASAL areas.
The forest organization has asked Kenyans and other stakeholders to help it grow more trees during the current rainy season, which is projected to run until January 2024.
