Raila Odinga’s son, Raila Junior has voiced his support for releasing blogger and influencer Maverick Aoko, who was arrested and detained by DCI officers on Friday. Aoko was questioned at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road after being taken into custody over a series of social media posts, and was later held at Muthaiga Police Station ahead of her court appearance.
In a post on X, Raila Junior emphasized that everyone can freely express themselves on social media.
“People should be free to post whatever nonsense they want #FreeAoko
@ray_omollo,” he wrote.
Aoko’s arrest gained public attention after someone identifying themselves as her aide posted a tweet on her account.
Did you read this?
“This is Aoko’s Aide. She was arrested this morning & has been detained. They have also denied her legal counsel,” read the post.
Another post on Aoko's account revealed that she was arrested at her home, where DCI officers confiscated her electronics.
“Yesterday, the DCI stormed Aoko’s home with more than three Subaru vehicles in a blatant show of force. They ransacked her house, seized her electronics(phones, laptop) without justification. She is still DETAINED without a valid reason. Absolute abuse of power.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was among those who visited Aoko at the police station, describing the charges she is facing as baseless.
“I went to see@AokoOtieno_ maverick today at @DCI_Kenyaheadquarters. The charge on her is vexatious,frivolous,fickle and limping. The DCI is on a fishing expedition.#FreeAoko She’s being held at Muthaiga Police Station and they have refused to admit her on bail which is her constitutional right,” HE SAID.
