Political and journalism experts foresee a potential shakeup in the 2027 presidential race if former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i decides to run. However, former Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire argues that it's too early to predict the impact of Matiang'i's candidacy with certainty, as many variables could change before the election.
"It would be fascinating to observe the reception the candidacy will receive among Kenyans during a period [of] demand for a change in the political landscape, predominantly spearheaded by Generation Z," said Bosire. Matiang'i will have to deal with the nation's big political players, who have an impact on presidential elections, according to political risk specialist Dismus Mokua.
Mokua argues that in Kenyan politics, influential political figures and tribal leaders hold more sway than performance. He suggests that unless Fred Matiang'i can successfully navigate the country's complex tribal dynamics and secure the support of key political players, his track record may not significantly impact the presidential race. Before President Kenyatta endorsed Raila Odinga, there were speculations that Matiang'i might run for president with former Health CS Mutahi Kagwe as his running mate.
However, in response to the changing political landscape and the perception of Ruto's strong presidential ambitions, President Kenyatta decided to support Raila Odinga instead. This move was seen as an effort to block his deputy, Ruto, thereby complicating the anticipated succession plan.
