US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Pam Bondi, a seasoned prosecutor and former Florida attorney general, as his choice for attorney general, following the withdrawal of Matt Gaetz from consideration earlier in the day.

Bondi, a long-time ally of Trump, has an extensive history in law enforcement. She served nearly two decades as a prosecutor and as Florida's attorney general, where she was known for her tough stance on violent crime. Bondi was also a key figure in Trump's legal team during his first impeachment trial and has been a vocal supporter, including appearing at his hush money trial in New York.

"Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on violent criminals and made the streets safe for Florida families," Trump announced on social media. Bondi, who has maintained a close relationship with Trump since his 2016 campaign, described him as a "friend" during a recent rally.

In 2019, Bondi joined Trump’s White House team to focus on impeachment messaging and played a key role in his legal defense during his first impeachment trial, which ended in acquittal. She also supported Trump's unfounded claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election and chaired the legal division of the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank.

If confirmed by the Senate, Bondi will oversee the Justice Department, managing over 115,000 employees and a $45 billion budget. She will be central to Trump’s pledge to "punish his political enemies" and reform the Justice Department, which he has criticized as "weaponized" against Republicans.

“Pam will refocus the DOJ on fighting crime and making America safe again,” Trump said, outlining plans to dismantle criminal organizations, protect borders, and restore public trust in the department.

Bondi’s nomination follows Gaetz’s withdrawal amid a controversy over allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Gaetz, who denied the claims, stated that the issue was becoming a "distraction" for Trump’s administration. Despite stepping aside, Gaetz praised Bondi as a "stellar selection" who would bring essential reforms to the DOJ.

Trump’s allies anticipate a smoother confirmation process for Bondi. Senator Lindsey Graham called her nomination a "slam dunk" and predicted swift approval. Bondi’s appointment is the latest in a series of Trump loyalists named to key positions in his incoming administration.
