The newly formed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), officially unveiled on May 15, 2025, has launched an ambitious nationwide membership recruitment campaign, claiming over one million sign-ups within the first 24 hours.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua spearheaded the launch of DCP, positioning it as a key vehicle to consolidate support in the Mt Kenya region and mount a robust opposition challenge against President William Ruto in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Immediately after its unveiling, the party activated its digital platforms and rolled out a vigorous online registration drive. Within a day, its verified X (formerly Twitter) account attracted over 8,000 followers, a clear indication of the growing interest and traction the party is gaining online.

DCP Organising Secretary Mithika Linturi reported that the party had registered approximately 1.2 million members since the launch. “We expect to surpass five million members by the end of next week,” Linturi said, citing overwhelming enthusiasm from across the country.
To facilitate the recruitment process, the party launched a dedicated registration portal on its official website, aiming to harness technology to reach supporters nationwide. “DCP is poised to become Kenya’s largest political party by membership within a few months,” Linturi added.
In addition to its online efforts, the party has initiated grassroots mobilisation campaigns across the country to bolster registration numbers and galvanise public support.
As part of its promotional efforts, DCP released a video guiding prospective members through the registration process. It instructs them to first resign from any existing political parties using the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) USSD code. After completing the resignation, users can then reinitiate the process and enroll with DCP by entering the party’s unique code: 829.
Kenyan law prohibits dual membership in political parties. To ensure compliance with the Political Parties Act, 2011, the ORPP enforces strict registration protocols. Citizens can confirm their current party affiliation by dialling *509# on major mobile networks, a service that incurs only a standard Sh1 subscriber fee.
Alternatively, members of the public can verify their political party status or update their records through the Political Parties Management Information System (PPMIS) or via the Government Digital Services (eCitizen) portal, with only standard internet charges applying.
DCP’s rapid rise and digital-forward strategy indicate its intent to significantly reshape the political landscape in the coming months.
