On April 4, 2023, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua shocked the audience at the Social Protection Conference after giving a very short speech.

The main visitors during the celebration, which was held at the Kenya School of Government in Kabete, were President William Ruto and Vice President Riggy Gachagua.

Gachagua, who is used to giving extended speeches on past occasions, took less than a minute to welcome the President to the podium for his address. Rigathi Gachagua said he does not have much to say when Kenya is peaceful. According to the vice president Kenya is peaceful and businesses are uninterrupted.

“I have nothing to say when Kenyan is at peace, business is up. We are at peace. I have nothing to say. Welcome, President, and address us,” said the Deputy President.

Compared to the earlier speakers, including Anne Waiguru, Chair of the Council of Governors, and Francis Atwoli, Secretary General of Cotu, this one was somewhat shorter.

Kenyans were puzzled by the dramatic change in Gachagua's statement and questioned whether he had been told to be more circumspect in his criticism of the opposition.
