Several people were on Friday admitted at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu following the Saba Saba demonstrations called by the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.
A police officer who was swept up by protesters throwing stones at the law enforcement authorities was one of those who was admitted.
The officer struck in the eye, was seen being carried to a police car by his coworkers.
He had intervened with other officers to prevent looting at the Rubis petrol station on Nairobi Road.
Within the station, the demonstrators had surrounded a grocery and ransacked it as they carried products away.
Around three people, according to human rights campaigner Boniface Akatch, were also hurt.
“I have recorded the injuries and I fear for the worst if the situation doesn’t stop,” he said.
Akatch said those injured sustained beatings by the police using batons.
“There is a young man whose ear was ripped off by a baton,” he noted
Protesters engaged the police in running battles along Nairobi Road as an anti-government march called by opposition leader Raila Odinga unfolded.
