A video surfaced, capturing a contingent of police officers escorting Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, as he was being taken out of Wanguru Police Station. Babu Owino had been held at the station since Wednesday, July 18. At Wang'uru Police Station, the officers also transferred former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, who was being held in the same facility as Babu Owino. Maina Njenga's lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, asserted that his client was being detained alongside Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino at Wang'uru Police Station.

Barely minutes after the police officers forcefully evicted his wife, friends, and relatives who had gathered at the station to demand his release, Babu Owino was taken out of the Wanguru Police Station. The video captures the swift action by the police, escalating the situation further.

Addressing the media, Maina Njenga's lawyer Ndegwa Njiiru confirmed that he had been able to see Babu Owino "I've been able to see Babu Owino. The police have been very cooperative and have shown a great level of professionalism," Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru confirmed.

Fridah Ongili, Babu Owino's wife, was present at the police station and addressed the protesters, expressing her confidence that her husband would be released soon. Her words conveyed optimism amid the tense situation, providing reassurance to those gathered in support of Babu Owino's release.

"We are here to demand the immediate release of Babu Owino. He is innocent of the charges against him and he has been mistreated by the police," Fridah stated.

On Thursday, July 20, 2023, friends and relatives of Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, gathered at Wang'uru Police Station in Kirinyaga County to demand his immediate release. They addressed the media at the station, expressing their concern and advocating for his swift release.

In response to what they described as unconstitutional kidnapping and detention by the State, the Azimio la Umoja Coalition has lodged a petition with the High Court. The coalition is seeking the release of its nine leaders and their associates, aiming to address the alleged unlawful detention and secure their freedom.

The nine missing people were last seen with police officers, some of whom were not only clothed in their official uniforms but also drove GK cars, according to the petition submitted by attorney Danstan Omari.

"Unless this honorable court certifies this matter as urgent and orders the production of the Applicants before this court, the rights of the Applicants which include the right to peacefully demonstrate, to freedom of movement and to associate freely with others to exercise their political rights will continue to be violated," read the court file.

Relatives and associates of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who visited Wanguru Police Station to request his release from jail, were ejected by police authorities.
