On Wednesday morning, chaos broke out at a bursary distribution event hosted by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi in the Ruiru constituency.
A mob demanding inclusion on the list of beneficiaries forced police to step in and end the dangerous situation.
Local MCAs protested at the ceremony, which was hosted at PCEA Membley Church in the Gitothua ward, and accused the Governor of undermining them and mismanaging County matters.
The MCAs, including Kennedy Odhiambo (Kahawa Sukari), Kimani wa Nduta (Biashara), and John Kamande (Gitothua), expressed their displeasure with Wamatangi's management of the County's chicken and pig distribution program and the distribution of bursary funds.
Additionally, the MCAs charged the Governor of breaking his campaign promises and being responsible for the return of Sh3 billion to the Treasury in the fiscal year 2022-2023.
Governor Wamatangi denied accusations that he was undermining other county officials and defended his actions by claiming he was committed to serve the people of Kiambu.
He said that the MCAs have been pressuring him to pay them money and other unrealistic political favors.
Along with the MCAs, Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang'wa criticized Wamatangi's leadership.
Thang'wa said that the Governor was acting alone because no actual County Secretary, Chief Officers, or members of the County Executive Committee (CECM) had been appointed.
The senator raised concern that the government had halted the approval of housing processes, a move that continues to cripple the county’s economy.
Wamatangi has been grappling to work with his MCAs and other elected leaders in Kiambu County, a challenge that has seen Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua intervene.
Although Wamatangi sat with MPs from his county in May to resolve his differences with other leaders, Thang’wa says nothing has happened since.
