Ajax Amsterdam has fired coach Maurice Steijn, the Eredivisie club said following four league defeats that left them second from bottom.
Steijn, 49, joined Ajax on a three-year deal in June following a season at Sparta Rotterdam, but their only league win came against promoted Heracles at the start of the season.
"We came to the conclusion that this is what is best for Ajax," Steijn told the club's website.
"Everyone who knows me knows I have done everything I can to return Ajax to its rightful place." But I didn't succeed."
Ajax currently has five points after seven games.
In the Europa League, they play Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday before traveling to PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.
