The Cabinet has honored the late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who died in a road accident alongside his Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

According to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, during a meeting chaired by President William Ruto, the Cabinet observed a minute of silence in memory of the late Kiptum and his Rwandan coach.

"Cabinet meeting underway at State House Nairobi, with President William Ruto leading Cabinet secretaries in honouring the late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, by observing a one-minute silence," Mohamed said in a press release.

Kiptum, 24, was driving to Eldoret in the Rift Valley when his car slid off the road and crashed into a tree.

He made his marathon debut in October with a world record time of 2:00:35 in Chicago, shaving 34 seconds off Kipchoge's previous mark.

He was only 23 years old then, and this was his third marathon.

Kiptum also won his other two races, his debut in Valencia in 2022 and a follow-up in London the following year, setting three of the seven fastest marathon times in history. He was set to compete against Legend Kipchoge.
