Rayo Vallecano signed Colombian playmaker and former Real Madrid star James Rodriguez as a free agent on Monday. The 33-year-old recently played a key role in helping his national team finish as runners-up in the Copa America, where he was also named player of the tournament.

Rodriguez joined Rayo Vallecano after terminating his contract with Brazilian club Sao Paulo. The Madrid-based club is marking its centenary this season, and Rodriguez's arrival is seen as a marquee addition.

In a statement, the Spanish club said, "(Rayo makes their) star signing in what is their most special season, celebrating 100 years of history, bravery, courage, and nobility."

Rodriguez gained global recognition as the top scorer at the 2014 World Cup, which led to his move from Monaco to Real Madrid. During his time with Los Blancos, he won two La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies. The Colombian also spent two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich before leaving Madrid in 2020 to join Everton. He later had stints in Qatar and Greece before moving to Sao Paulo in 2023.
