Arsenal's sporting director Edu Gaspar stepped down on Monday, expressing a desire to "pursue a different challenge" after leading the club’s recent revival.

Edu, a former midfielder from Arsenal's last Premier League-winning team in 2003/04, became the club's first technical director in 2019. The 46-year-old was instrumental in hiring Mikel Arteta as manager later that year. Reports suggest the Brazilian may now join Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis, owner of Nottingham Forest and Olympiakos.

“This was an incredibly hard decision to make,” Edu said in a statement on Arsenal’s website. “I’ve loved working with so many fantastic colleagues across our men’s, women’s, and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend. Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always be in my heart, and I wish the club and its supporters nothing but the best.”

Edu returned to Arsenal five years ago after serving as sporting director for Corinthians and a similar role with Brazil’s national team. He led a strategic rebuild, phasing out older players like Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in favor of a younger squad that has flourished under Arteta, though trophies have been limited.

While Arsenal's last trophy was the FA Cup in 2020, the team has finished as Premier League runners-up to Manchester City in each of the past two seasons.
