Arsenal sent a clear message that they are still severe title contenders by defeating woeful Chelsea 3-1 at Emirates Stadium to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League.

The Gunners had gone four league tournaments and had yet to win. They were humiliated by defending champions Manchester City, who overtook them at the top with a win against Fulham on Sunday.

Arsenal reacted with a spectacular first-half performance, surging into a 3-0 lead after 34 minutes thanks to two clean strikes by captain Martin Odegaard and a scrambling finish by Gabriel Jesus.

Chelsea, who suffered their sixth straight defeat under interim manager Frank Lampard, were grateful to goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for keeping the scoreline from becoming even more humiliating and even pulled one back through Noni Madueke.

Arsenal, on the other hand, were never seriously threatened and is now two points ahead of City despite having played two games more than their title rivals.
