In April 2020, the anti-graft commission initiated an inquiry after receiving reports that 300 sacks of relief food belonging to Tana North villagers had gone missing.

The resulting case was transferred to the power of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), who charged the suspect with abuse of power in violation of Section 46 read with Section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act of 2003.

Bonaya was apprehended in Malindi and promptly sent to the EACC Garissa Regional Offices for processing.

He is scheduled to appear before the Garissa anti-corruption court on Thursday, March 1, 2024.
