Fishermen at Siginga Beach in Nyatike, Migori County, have been forced to suspend fishing activities after the backflow of water from Lake Victoria submerged the landing area.
Oscar Kajimba, head of the Sigiga Beach Management Unit, said that the floodwaters had partially wrecked the structure holding the unit's office and other beach services.
According to Kajimba, the fishermen were compelled to hunt for an elevated area away from the shore to do other tasks, such as weighing the fish.
The BMU secretary stated that the water from the lake had flooded residences near the shore, causing the residents to seek safety elsewhere. He urged the government to help them.
“Fishmongers are having challenges drying sardine. They are incurring huge post-harvest losses caused by the bad weather,” Kajimba said.
