Members of the National Assembly have officially approved Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President, following his nomination by President William Ruto.

Speaker Moses Wetang'ula announced the outcome, stating, "The nomination is hereby declared passed by the House, and the Speaker will transmit the result to the president. The Speaker will also sign a gazette notice to this effect." This approval paves the way for President Ruto to formally appoint Kindiki as his principal assistant. Kindiki will now await his swearing-in ceremony.

Currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kindiki’s nomination was submitted to the National Assembly on Friday. Speaker Wetang’ula made the announcement during a special parliamentary session. "I have received a message from the president regarding the nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy in the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya," Wetang'ula said.

According to the Constitution, once the president submits a nomination to the National Assembly, MPs vote to either approve or reject the nominee without the need for a two-thirds majority. Some MPs had initially raised concerns about whether Kindiki’s nomination could be approved on the same day it was submitted. However, Speaker Wetang'ula clarified that the Constitution allows for the nomination and voting to occur on the same day, as long as it falls within the constitutional timeline.

Regarding public participation, the Speaker noted that it was not required in this case. He explained that positions such as Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and members of the East African Legislative Assembly are similarly exempt from public participation during their selection process. "The practice of the House in these cases is to proceed directly to a vote without public participation," Wetang’ula said. He further emphasized that Article 149(1) of the Constitution mandates the House to vote upon receiving a nomination, making public participation unnecessary for the role of Deputy President.
